Econyl | Net Gains

The oceans of the world are currently the unhappy home to around 640,000 tons of discarded nylon fishing nets. Not only is nylon non-biodegradable, so will end up snaring marine life for years to come, its manufacturing is also a highly polluting, dirty process. Both big problems.

Here at Finisterre we continually try to push innovation, and are always on the lookout for new partners who can provide solutions for less harmful ways to make products. For some time now we have been trying to find a supplier of a hardwearing, recycled alternative to nylon.

So our ears pricked up when we heard of a team of engineers in Slovenia who had invented a way of converting discarded nylon into a high performance fibre, ECONYL®, suitable for use in swimwear. We were even more excited to find that some of the nylon being used came from discarded fishing nets.

A few animated conversations led to the start of a relationship that has seen us incorporate ECONYL® into our swimwear range, closing the loop and turning a problem into a solution.

We will donate 10% of profits from the sale of ECONYL® swimwear to Surfers Against Sewage, an environmental charity protecting UK waves, oceans and beaches.
